Description
LOCATION:
Magna Plaza is one of the most famous locations in Amsterdam's city center. Built between 1895 and 1899, the former post office is a magnificent building. The imposing arcade between the Royal Palace on Dam Square and the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) has been a familiar sight for almost a century, first as the main post office and now as a shopping center of international standing. Architect Cornelis Hendrik Peters designed Magna Plaza in the Neo-Gothic style, a blend of Gothic and Romantic elements, exemplified by the Houses of Parliament in London. In 1992, this magnificent building was added to the list of Amsterdam's most valuable monuments. Four renowned architects were invited to submit a renovation plan for the first indoor shopping and lifestyle center in the heart of the city. Two open spaces adjacent to the existing central hall create a spacious atmosphere from the basement to the roof, a feeling enhanced by a flood of natural light streaming through the large glass dome.
